Foursquare steps outside city walls, allows check-ins anywhere

Since the launch of Foursquare, playing the location-based checkin game depended on being in one of the officially-supported cities. Some large cities in the U.S. and elsewhere are still waiting to be added to the list. Well, the wait is (nearly) over, even if you live in some remote nether-region. Foursquare will soon span the globe, so you'll be able to check in anywhere you go. Heck, even Download Squad's Lee Mathews, who lives way out in La Pas, Manitoba, will be able to play Foursquare now.

City-specific badges will also be phased out, so you don't have to become a newbie, go on a bender or become a local in each city individually. New badges, more suited to a global game, are being designed to introduce additional challenges. The main challenge here is from Foursquare competitor Gowalla, which started out without city limits, and has taken off fast as a result. Foursquare is adapting to survive, though, and it'll be interesting to see the two sites push one another toward bigger and better features this year.
