MySpace replaces embedded imeem playlists with ringtone ads

To say that the imeem purchase by MySpace has been messy would be a bit of a gross understatement. Its primary purpose -- creating playlists -- was broken by its transition to MySpace's ownership and website. Right now imeem users are basically and functionally screwed: imeem currently does... well, nothing. Well, until today that is: now imeem playlists display ringtone ads.

You could almost forgive imeem and MySpace, given the details of the situation. Imeem was in dire financial straits -- an immediate buy-out from MySpace was the only solution. 'The playlists will just have to wait' -- fair enough! They're even being re-built by hand, apparently.

Why though is MySpace rushing things? 16 million users is nothing to sneer at, yet here they are jerking them all around. Replacing every embedded playlist with a big, bold, orange box that advertises ringtones sends a pretty bold message: MySpace doesn't care. Imeem playlists are currently displayed on big and important blogs and websites all over the Internet -- but by tomorrow, they'll all magically disappear.

Smooth MySpace, smooth.
