Twitter gets a sign-up API, goes trolling for new users on other sites

After reports that Twitter's rapid growth has stalled lately, on top of constant speculation about what the site's business model might be, it's not all that surprising to hear about Twitter's latest feature.

It's a signup API that will allow other sites to register you for a Twitter account without visiting Twitter.com. It's not available to developers yet, but it's already in action at CitySearch, a popular guide to local businesses.

If you're making a new CitySearch profile, or updating an existing one, you can now tie it to a Twitter account or sign up for a new one on the spot. A lot of CitySearch's users are the businesses themselves, which indicates that Twitter might be targeting business owners for the premium accounts that have been rumored for so long. Any business model that Ev, Biz and Co. come up with is going to be based on Twitter's massive user base, so I can't really fault them for taking steps to make that base even bigger.
