Mozilla rebranding Weave as Firefox Sync... iPhone app coming?

Mozilla's getting ready to deliver yet another update to Weave. This time around it's about more than just adding speed and tidying up the user interface -- though those improvements are important.

It looks as though Mozilla has decided it's time to clarify what Weave does, and to that end they're changing its name. Version 1.3b5 and forward will be known as Firefox Sync, which should make it a little easier for less in-the-know Firefox users to find the add-on and figure out what it does.

In addition to re-branding, Firefox Sync boasts faster syncing, Fennec (Firefox for Mobile) support, and backend servers that are able to support a much greater number of connections. Another thoughtful change is that your bookmarks will be backed up prior to the initial sync -- giving you an 'undo' in the event a disastrous accidental overwrite should occur.

One other interesting change is the introduction of a JavaScript crytographic wrapper which enables experimental compatibility with Android, WebOS, and 'others.'

Ages ago, Mozilla hinted at an iPhone app... maybe Firefox Sync and one of the 'others' they're talking about have something to do with that...?

If you want to take Firefox Sync 1.3b5 for a spin, hit up this page and look for the experimental version in the big, green bar.
