TeamSpeak 3 released!

TeamSpeak 3 (TS3) has been released. It's just a beta, but considering how long we've had to live with TS2, a beta is still big news! There's so much traffic to their site right now that they've simply got a temporary holding page up.

TeamSpeak is a 'voice communication' program (or 'voice comms') most often used for online games. It's like a bunch of chat rooms, all connected together, but the primary form of communication is voice. At its most basic, it's like a conference call, but with lots of fun things you can do -- like making private channels, or muting specific people.

Now, because the TeamSpeak site is down I can't access the rest of their site, including any change logs, so it's actually impossible for me to tell you what exactly has changed. But, thanks to the wonders of the Google cache, I can tell you the following:
  • The license remains the same -- servers will still be free, for non-profit use. Guilds and clans can finally move away from the draconian licensing of Ventrilo! HOORAY!
  • Sound quality should be higher -- I remember some mention of codec changes? That was always the problem with TS2 -- it sounded like ass.
  • There are Linux and Mac releases -- unlike Ventrilo, TeamSpeak 3 has Mac and Linux ports from the get-go.
All that remains now is for you to grab the client, set up a server, and beta test this bad boy.
Is it obvious that I play a lot of online games yet? What kind of nerd stays on top of news like this? Me, that's who.
