Google Places: businesses get their own Google profiles

People have been able to create Google profiles since 2008, and now places are getting their own Google pages. As part of an effort to make things in the real world more searchable, Google has converted its blandly-named Local Business Center into the much sexier Google Places.

Places combines the 4 million pages that business owners have added to the Local Business Center with the 50 million Place Pages Google has already created. Google Places adds a bunch of new features to go along with the new name. Businesses can download custom QR codes that link directly to their Places page, they can buy top billing for keywords in local searches with a new advertising program, and they can even have Google do a photoshoot of their interiors for free.

Can you say "indoor Street View?" Awesome.
