Play with the Google Chrome OS app launcher on latest Windows Chromium builds

Google's Chrome OS is due some time later this year, and the browser-based OS is going to be quite different from what you're used to. While it's essentially a heavily modified Linux base with Google Chrome on top, there are several features planned which we probably won't ever see on versions for other operating systems. Chrome's app launcher tab, however, you can play with.

If you've tried out Hexxeh's Chromium OS (which is built on the code for Google Chrome OS) or if you've seen screenshots, you may have already seen the Chrome OS app launcher. If you haven't and you'd like to see what it's going to look like, you can now download one of the recent Chromium buildbot snapshots.

Once you've got it installed, you need to add a command line switch: --app-launcher-new-tab. Don't know how to add switches? Check out our tutorial post.

Chromium then replaces your old new tab page with the Chrome OS app launcher. It's got Chrome's Omnibox at the top (so you can still type to pull up bookmarks, pages in your history, or go to a specific URL) and a list of web apps and their favicons below.

There's no way to customize the app launcher tab yet, but who knows -- maybe that's coming soon.
