FeedSquares is a stylish interface for Google Reader

FeedSquares

DLS commenters are quite the savvy bunch ... I don't mean the commenters who keep urging me to get Viagra and BMW (what kind of weird spam is that, anyway?) but guys like Philip, who commented on my post regarding the rather-cruddy Desktop Google Reader and pointed me in the direction of something much cooler: FeedSquares.

FeedSquares is a Chrome extension (and an Android app) which puts a pretty face on your existing Google Reader feeds. It's quite lean and is still lacking some key features, but it's fast and it does work. Your feeds are represented as a bunch of squares (you guessed it!), and your categories are listed above. When you click a category, all feeds dim down, and only those related to that category pop up and are visible and bright. The background can be toggled between night and day mode (dark and bright, in other words).

The items for each feed appear as a horizontal strip near the bottom of the window. When you click on an item, it opens, still within Squares.

Once you expand an item, buttons are supposed to appear at the bottom, letting you star the item or share it. It didn't really work for me -- I didn't see the buttons at the default zoom level (because the item was lengthy), and when I zoomed out the interface went completely off-kilter on me and I couldn't get it to align correctly again.

As I said, seems a bit wet behind the ears, but definitely moving in the right direction. FeedSuares is definitely one to keep an eye on.
